Is anybody else learning around here? I'm sure we have or people who know it, but would it be super duper boring for you if there were folks on that tag with learning or practice?

(NB: I'm aware that capitalization matters with d/Deaf and HoH, but I try to make a habit of using CamelCase for hashtags, which is why they are formatted that way.)

@Cobalt It's always a little difficult when accessibility and proper usage collide. Camel case hashtags don't adhere to Proper Usage but they allow screen readers to know where the word divisions are.

@noelle Yeah. I figured I'd just err on the side of accessibility and make it clear that's what I was doing, and that I wasn't doing it to make any kind of statement on how various people ought to relate to how their senses and perception and those of other ppl function.

I'm just over here trying to reason with screen readers, is all!

@Cobalt had to take it in undergrad bc i majored in speech-language pathology/audiology, albeit that delved more into continuum with signed english so i self stud(y/ied) a lot
did it out of interest, made language reqs for graduation easier, also constituted a second non-indo-european language due to qualifications for some linguistics grad programs
constantly battled my audiology prof who had an incredibly garbage attitude toward being Deaf and also toward disability in general

@Cobalt PS: glad you know the capitalization matters, thats a small but important lesson, keep up with the spreading it to others and advocate for recognition and respect

@oletedstilts I mention it whenever I can. It's a great example of preferences for person-first vs. identity-first language not necessarily being what folks outside a community would expect, & since the community was good enough to teach me this (before I realized it was my community too) I try to pay it forward for other kinda-sorta related topics.

What lets ppl receive respect is always more important than what makes "allies" feel like they've sent it. 24/7 Big Mood, lol

@Cobalt in the special education class for certification to operate in the school system, they went on from a very abled perspective about person-first being superior to identity-first and i had a time with that

i have tourettes so we dont really have specific terms, but redeeming that im disabled and fine if not proud rather than a person with a disability (being handled like im fine china) was something of a challenge im glad i overcame

mild mention of ableist slurs and cops Show more

@Cobalt

I've been wanting to study it for a long time, and there's been talk of a unofficial club at my college so I'd love to see discussion and resources here if there is enough interest

@Cobalt
I want to learn. I've watched a few videos but so far nothing really sticks
