#hammock so the test with the hammock had one result: I can't seem to lie in it diagonally enough to be lying with a relatively straight back. I tried my best, I checked all factors, I hung the hammock higher or lower and with different rope angles. a bit frustrating, I don't know if that's suitable for sleeping. it's a "ticket to the moon" single hammock. we have another one that's bigger and I think I will be luckier with that, but still annoying that the tttm isn't working.
@Yulran I just made a test run of 1 hour in the park. for sleeping I'm going to use an exped hammock, which is bigger. we're two people in this household so we have two hammocks here, yay!
to stay warm underneath I will use my thermarest sleeping mat. I'll just put it inside the hammock diagonally.
thanks for sharing the tttm double experience!
@distel Oh, yeah, sleeping mat! That's something to consider next time I want to improvise sleeping in the forest. Thanks for the tip. I had also tried putting a real 90cm-wide mattress inside but I didn't worked out so well :D
@Yulran I heard that people in the US are using "underquilts" but as far as I know they are not available in germany, where I live.
the trick with them is, that you're not lying on top of them, compressing them and reducing their insulation, they are hung up under the hammock.
@distel Looks comfy! Thanks, I'll investigate that.
@distel somewhere in the attic I have stashed (probably mouse-eaten by now) a wonderful hammock which is designed to sleep in *crossways*. The co. that sold them claimed that original hammocks were like this but western sailors changed the design to save space and it stuck.
It's hella comfy but we sat in it like once and couldn't work out how to safely put it up at home :(
@distel I have the ticket to the moon double, and this one is okay to sleep in diagonal (and I'm sleeping on the side/belly so the flatness requirements are pretty high). The single I can't really imagine though!
I'm curious how you managed to sleep outdoors without freezing. Indoors I still needs to have thick blankets under a sleeping bag to isolate my back, or I can feel the air going under the hammock. Did you have a very warm sleeping bag?
