I think other than gender and the general clusterfuck with human representation, animals is probably the worst part of Unicode Standard emoji.


- Frequent instances of weirdly genericised entities ('Bird', 'Fish', 'Tropical Fish')
- Animals can be depicted however you like, until you can't. There are 18 specific 'face' animal emoji, 9 of which have other more generic codepoints in the standard.

So my design intentions for animal emoji is to just draw heads/faces for the most part. But the 9 overlapping 'face' emoji fuck that up a bit. It also gets really confusing because different vendors choose to do faces and full-body renderings for different animals.
