Hey everyone! As you might know already, a.weirder.earth suffered a catastrophic hardware failure, taking us down for about 2 weeks and forcing us to move to a completely new instance.
A lot of us (myself included) didn't back up our follows either. So we're very much on square one.
How you can help:
- Contribute to #ff (follow friday) tomorrow. Everyone could do with the follow suggestions.
- Check your follows. If anyone is from 'a.weirder.earth', refollow them on 'weirder.earth'.
Thanks!
@dzuk oh fuck I didn't realize it was that serious :s
@lulucybrelu yep! fuck Scaleway for their shitty service, but also we didn't take care of backups, so it was a shared blame I guess x∆∆x.
(we are totally backing up now)
@dzuk @lulucybrelu Where are ya dumping you backups now if i can poke ya for it? :p
@Sir_Boops @lulucybrelu iirc, we're using a DO droplet and simply using DO's automated backup service.
@dzuk @lulucybrelu Saving backups to the same host that it's hosted by! :o
@Sir_Boops @lulucybrelu nah, DO's automated backups go to Amazon Glacier.
@vi that's a great idea, thanks!
Here's another thing you can do #weirderearth users - you can ask your followers from other instances if they have any caches of your old follows from their instances.
(thanks @vi for the suggestion!)
Oh yeah - if you can't find a user from a.weirder.earth on weirder.earth - it might be because they have moved to another instance (so search just for their display name or username and see if you get anything), were inactive or have yet to join back.
First person I checked does not have an account on weirder.earth.
Was the user list automatically recreated?
Could the person have gone elsewhere, instead?
@Algot yeah, they could be somewhere else. Not everyone on a.weirder.earth is on the new instance, that might change in the future, but that might always be the case because they decided to move to a new instance or were an inactive user when we went down.
Thanks. That explains it.
I'll do more searching, hoping that the person is using the same handle.
I'll be lost if that, too, has changed along with the instance.
@saper they might be inactive users, on another instance, or yet to join back
@dzuk Head canon is that those lines in the background are the meridians of the sufficiently weirder earth
