Pinned post

Guess I'll start with my current bio: "🥨 👵 🌲 🏖️ On the edge of the Pine Barrens between Philly and the Jersey Shore. Elder nerd. She/her."

I've been on the fediverse since 2016 (not counting some earlier forays into OStatus sites), and before that my credentials go back to the dial-up BBS and Usenet days. I'm also at @silverseams as my bidness making dragons and whatnot with robots.

Married to @CarlCravens, mom to @sunsetmoth.

It doesn't look like the transfer request made it to too many servers, but I am now on a single account, @silverseams. If you haven't been hearing from me for the past week, guess you gotta manually re-follow.

(If you don't want to hear all about the embroidery-biz stuff, I hashtag that so you can filter it out.)

ukpol, 😆

Listening to the NPR Up First podcast, recorded early this morning (US time) and the reporter is telling the host "there hasn't been the avalanche of high-profile resignations that really would have sunk Johnson."

The NPR Politics podcast has a "things may have changed by the time you hear this" timestamp; maybe Up First needs to borrow it. (Granted I'm a little behind and they *expect* you to listen to it first thing in the morning, but still.)

the Dilbert guy

Every time I see people talking about Scott Adams' latest awful thing, I go "couldn't possibly be any worse than last time" and then I go look and it always, somehow, is!

(cw he Has Opinions on what to about mass shootings and guess what, it somehow involves SO MUCH MORE DEATH, someone needs to get that man involuntarily committed, he is not well)

uspol, gun cult/ure, "lone wolves"

Apart from the whole "lone wolf" bs ignoring the fact that shooters are all being radicalized by different combos of the same small set of sources... this is another young guy whose family enabled it.

Literally got all his sharps (buttload of knives and a sword) taken away because he threatened to kill his family, then 2-3 months later the same family signed off on him getting firearms as a <21. MAKE THAT MAKE SENSE!

USAnians: If you've got a tank of gas and can make it last a week or two, filling up should be a whole lot cheaper next time around.

food, pandemic mention, +

... were compelled to bail, and landed on a place that was one of the first places we ate when we moved here (and we've had it delivered since), and discovered that in addition to a few tables in the front of the strip mall, they had a whole little side patio festooned with lights and (fake) flowers.

We're not doing great with being able to eat at our planned location, but at least we've managed.

food, pandemic mention, +

The weather has been so weird this spring that we kinda didn't get around to going out to eat even when it got warm, and now we've done it twice in the past week and while it's expensive (especially since we're still in "tip like it's a pandemic" mode) it has been very restorative.

One chain had a patio but apparently not enough staff so we bailed, and tried a new-to-us place with a nice patio. And then today another place hadn't unlocked their doors (wut) so we...

mass shooting, transphobia

"During the attack, [Highland Park shooter] was dressed in women's clothing, and investigators do believe he did this to conceal his facial tattoos and his identity and help him during the escape."

Aaaand probably because punk heard whichever of the alt-right flapjacks it was that immediately started throwing out disinfo about one of the [many] recent shootings being done by "a transgender" and wanted to dump a little more gasoline on that particular arson. 😒

rage-inducing, Marjorie Taylor Greene, but I repeat myself

So I guess the gunhuggers are giving up on "the problem is not enough mental health care" and are now going with "the problem is too much mental health care."

"I'm absolutely done with the political plays on this BS" is just :chefskiss: though, wow.

Karen C boosted

I have some slight regret about getting the refurb iPhone 7 as a camera; uploading to iCloud and downloading back to the desktop is *relatively* trivial, but not completely so. And Apple doesn't let anything else access the photos, so syncing directly is pretty much impossible. It'll let you copy the photos to files, but it "helpfully" compresses them all to HEIC files first. 😒

Does take nice pictures though.

(firmware loader is Windows-only and he has a Windows gaming box)

Carl helpfully re-firmwared the Varmilo, so we'll see if the key layout is more sensible now that Debian (hopefully) isn't detecting it as an Apple keyboard.

It does kind of weird me out that hot-swapping it results in the mouse buttons and control keys stopping working, which is both grammatically and operationally awkward: whatever window is active, I can continue to type away in, but I can't change windows with the keyboard *or* mouse. That's new in Deb11, or maybe new with the new mobo. 🤷

TIL the little text in the upper left is called an "eyebrow" which, okay, makes sense.

(cw: article is food and uspol)

haha whoops just deleted my entire Obsidian folder, cool

(I have backups)

(actually I guess that was Obsidian, while trying to connect it to a folder syncthing can see)

Poking around with syncthing and so far I have managed to unmount the SD card in my phone from the app, so that's fun. Whoops.

indirect j6 mention

Bead place announcing a sale: "Time to party like it's 1776!"

Can't decide if they're just hopelessly naive (probably) or insurrectionish (probably not but mayyyybe? Because how can you be DC-based and be that clueless?)
