Hey, so time.
My main aim in being here is exploring the usage of hometown and the fediverse as a whole, to ultimately hopefully host an instance for me&my closest friends. The impetus came from @darius's runyourown.social, which I read through recently.
My main interests right now include not having many spoons, self organization, bicycle tinkering, reading, gardening.

Chapter five just concluded, not that much happened already but still a good chunk to read in one sitting, and I'm hopeful it's going to be a great story.

climate collapse, tipping point study

»Physics-based early warning signal shows that AMOC is on tipping course«
science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

My outline of the (German) summary by @rahmstorf at scilogs.spektrum.de/klimaloung:
1· AMOC (the "gulf stream") does have a tipping point
2· we are getting closer to it
3· the study suggests a new, physics-based way to measure a warning sign
4· stability of AMOC has been overestimated in climate models
5· collapse would mean considerably colder winters in northern europe and shifts in tropical precipitation belts (monsoon, amazon, …) soon after

»On some level I think it's kind of a bummer that nearly all trans healthcare is still just prescribing bioidentical hormones and not exploring the uses of all the known SARMs and SERMs to let people tweak secondary sex characteristics at a finer granularity. This isn't merely a bias towards safety, this is a bias against letting people experiment with biological gender in ways the patriarchy thinks is threatening.«

Oh yeah, why did I find the mpv-libcaca thing?
I was looking how to tell mpv where to put the screenshots (just press 's' in mpv to make a screenshot). It was getting annoying getting them dumped in ~.
Now my video screencaps not only have a folder, but also the video filename and timestamp in the filename.

``` in mpv.conf:
screenshot-directory=~/Bilder/mpvShots
screenshot-template="%f %p"
```

couldn't write screenshot-dir in the config, it had to be …ectory

mpv has a libcaca output option:
`--vo=caca`

Fedi moving instances PSA

stefanbohacek.com/blog/preview is a tool where you can enter your contacts (followers/followees) and an instance you're considering moving to, and it'll show you which connections you'll lose (if any).

We Germans have a euphemism for malicious compliance, and I think that's beautiful.

»one of my favorite cool things related to language acquisition is the story of nicaraguan sign language.

it's a really new language, like, less than 100 years old, and it was.. invented? because the nicaraguan govt opened a school for deaf children which attempted to teach them language, but apparently in an ableist and obtuse way, focusing on lipreading/speaking and only bringing in sign language to spell out spanish words, which of course, the deaf children had no prior context for.. so it wasn't really effective.

instead the kids just sorta spontaneously came together and... started communicating amongst themselves, by basically collectively mashing together the ways that they communicated with their families at home and other meaningful gestures. the older kids taught the younger kids coming in the basics of the language that they had agreed upon, and the younger kids built upon it and made it more advanced. it's fascinating for multiple reasons«

> The Anarchik first appeared in 1967, a twist on the old caricature of a mad anarchist bomber. Within a few years, the little man with an irreverent grin was starring in a comic strip in the pages of one of Italy’s longest running anarchist publications.
