Hey, so #introductions time.
My main aim in being here is exploring the usage of hometown and the fediverse as a whole, to ultimately hopefully host an instance for me&my closest friends. The impetus came from @darius's https://runyourown.social, which I read through recently.
My main interests right now include not having many spoons, self organization, bicycle tinkering, reading, gardening.
This Guardian article <https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/jun/09/from-north-sea-revival-to-renewables-aberdeen-sees-corporate-interests-triumph > doesn't quite capture how violent and corrupt it is, nor how brutal is the entrenched opposition to ending fossil fuels, here in bitter #Aberdeen. In the past month as a cyclist I've been assaulted by motorcyclists freeriding across the park and my young kids have been abused by car drivers who nearly ran them down right under a "watch out for children" sign; my neighbours firmly believe climate change is a conspiracy to attack decent working people.
It's a bizarre nightmare out of Mad Max, and if the culture of worshipping cars and oil can change here there might be hope elsewhere. And there are otters breeding in the rivers. Maybe this is where we lose the struggle, maybe not, but it's definitely a conflict zone.
Okay folks, what have I found here? It's not a caterpillar, unless its legs are completely hidden and it never moves; if it's an animal at all, it's some kind of protective case for incubation, but I think it might be a fungus? Baffled. On a nettle in Aberdeen, Scotland. #NaturalHistory #mystery #pleaseHelpIdentify
Asylum politics
You have not even had your first cup of coffee and you are already caught up in the grim daily news.
Horrified by the EU's plans for inhumane changes to the asylum law - and their support by the German government. A Fortress Europe is not what we need in response to people needing to flee their countries.

Lima, one of the two creators of www.namesakecomic.com/ , a great webcomic I used to have time to follow, made a comic strip based on the prompt:
secondlina.tumblr.com/post/641…
She was planning to make a whole comic "Nope" based on it, but for now those plans are on hold.
I need somewhere to stay. Anyone have a spare room? #Melbourne #Australia possibly elsewhere. Need carer too can pay #Carer #Pension (up to 500$wk).
mark my words
in a few weeks, the fediverse as we know it will probably no longer exist
if project 92 is really launching this month...
remember to cherish the memories of the wonderful things this place has done for so many people
transphobic scam alert
HEY. important!
if you've seen and considered buying OTC Estrogen alternatives from QueerQuirk on Twitter, PLEASE be aware that they are fash. they changed their handle and unfollowed their transphobic accounts. the pills they advertise even has a main active ingredient that increases testosterone.
the whole thing is a scam to get the personal info of trans women, and ship them, if anything, something that reverses any gains made by their meds so far. do NOT engage.
An anthem for our times from 1640 (long)
Bro sent me a facebook link to a track by vocal ensemble Windborne of The Diggers' Song. I couldn't get sound to play, but just found a rendition of it on Bandcamp:
https://windborne.bandcamp.com/track/the-diggers-song
According to commentary on the video I couldn't fully access, the Diggers were a 17th century English sect that actively cultivated common land and believed in freedom and equality. The song itself includes the lyrics:
"Against the hate and fear, stand up now, stand up now,
Against the hate and fear, stand up now.
The press have closed their eyes, they spread the tyrants’ lies
They’ll tell you with their cries, who to love and to despise
Stand up now, Diggers all."
Solidarity is centuries old. Now more than ever we need to keep up the good fight and work toward our own liberation from the powers that would subdue us, just as people did in the 17th century.
Enjoy, rejoice, and unite! 💪
As a reader who really delights in connecting with people over books they love, it's a big loss to me that book-tracking sites and apps don't let you visibly mark the number of times you've read a title. I love rereading books, I find it so comforting. And it would be so cool to read some profile on a book site and realize we not only love the same book, but we reread it every year or two, too.
"no one wants to turn your kids gay/trans" is centrist fence sitting.
Yes, the right wing framing of transforming your kids via some sort of demonic spell is ridiculous. However, THE goal of our movement is to create space to allow all people (including kids) to experiment and fully embrace their autonomy. The right wing wants to force strict cages around the autonomy of people (especially kids). To the right, removing those fences is transforming kids (turning them gay).
Fence sitters saying they support those that made it over the fence, but aggressively defending the line is not the type of support that is needed. Instead, fetch the bolt cutters.
