The news has released the name and photo of person who was shot to death in my neighborhood yesterday. He was just a kid. 19 years old.
RIP, Royale Lexing.
I’m from somewhere that had a lot more violence than Seattle does. The city I am from had the highest murder rate in the country for years.
I’ve heard this same story so many times, a young Black man with his whole life ahead of him dies for no fucking reason.
I wish it were less normal for all of us, this story. It took a long time for me to realize just how fucked up it is to hear news like this and to react how I do, which is just like... “well this is how life goes I guess”.
What a beautiful picture, he had a great smile, great presence. I'm tearing up looking at that photo of his mother, imagining her trying to get through Mother's Day today. So much loss and heartbreak. We have failed our children.
@compostablespork we’ve failed so so many people.
@nein09 I passed by the memorial today. Balloons and flowers. And by it, a younger black boy getting on a bike wearing a Ninja Turtle helmet. How long will he be allowed to be a kid?
@nein09 RIP :(
