A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit
Employer-employee relations were turbulent all through this period. A story by the Argonaut, which served the elite of San Francisco, complained in July of “the extreme scarcity of house servants, although there are many thousands of people out of employment... The sooner this feeding of able bodied or able-bodies men and women is stopped, the better it will be for the city”
dawn spoilers (mostly just navel gazing about themes)
I finished Dawn. It’s interesting. I think it’s going to stick with me for a while the way real good stories do. At first I thought it was going to be a relatively straightforward allegory about colonization, and how the extreme power imbalance makes “fair-trade” something of a farce. And it is that, but it’s interestingly intersectional in how it is that and also a critique of bodice ripper erotica novels. #sffbookclub #amreading
Death’ End Spoiler
I have not been able to walk the ordinary person’s path. My path is, in reality, the journey of a civilization.
And now we know that this is the journey that must be made by every civilization: awakening inside a cramped cradle, toddling out of it, taking flight, flying faster and farther, and, finally, merging with the fate of the universe as one.
Death’s End - Cixin Liu
Death’s End (mild spoilers for part one)
So, I think Tianming is going to be the central protagonist of this book and like, man Cixin Liu loves him some failson protagonists
Death’s End quote (-)
“Fundamentally, Tianming was not suited to live in society, nor out of it. He lacked the ability to thrive in society, but also the resources to ignore it. All he could do was hang on to the edge, suffering. He had no idea where he was headed in life.”
Fucking mood Tianming. Big fucking mood.
Just a Turing machine trying to do right by his kids.
