Sometimes when people use the padlock icon, and I reply, especially if they asked a question, I'll reply in a DM or I'll reply publically, when it makes no sense that your to me and your followers should be replied by a post to my followers when those followers are likely completely different people..

@Sandra I think at least for Mastodon to Mastodon, if you reply to a followers-only post with the same visibility setting, it means their followers (and yours?).

@Sandra thinking about it, I clearly was wrong. I often only see parts of "locked" conversations because I don't follow all participants.
Another instance where I believed things to work like I suppose they should. I think it has to do with cognitive degradation and otoh being used to being right. :(
